The project “Everything in Your Hands” touches on one of the most pressing problems of our time – environmental awareness in children. It is intended primarily for students of grades 5-6, but can be used for older children. At the same time, the specifics of the topic and the structure of the project make it possible to effectively use its individual elements in geography lessons, as well as in environmental circles of extracurricular work.

Project objective:

  • to acquaint students with the main environmental problems, to show the dependence of all living things on human activity;
  • Involve students in environmental activities through implementationthe following tasks:
  • instill a sense of responsibility for the beauty and purity of nature (air, water, soil);
  • to cultivate observation, interest in nature and careful attitude to living and inanimate nature on the planet, natural resources of the Smolensk region, gifts of forests, lakes, rivers;
  • to acquaint with environmental problems of forest, soil, water bodies, air environment, which arose through the fault of man, with conservation activities carried out in these areas.

Expected outcomes:

  • fostering a sense of responsibility for the fate of the nature of your land, understanding the need to learn to protect your home, your Earth:
  • students’ awareness of the important role of ecology in solving global problems of our time;
  • cultivating a sense of responsibility for the beauty and purity of nature.

The project was carried out together with students of the 6th grade according to the following:plan:

1. Preparatory(creating a problem situation, brainstorming, choosing a project topic, setting a goal).

Before we started the project, we brainstormed.
Is it possible to develop environmental awareness? Before the start of the project, we prepared all the necessary resources, and also held a parental meeting in order to provide support to parents, to inform about the need for written consent to post photos of the child on the project website.
2. Designing(Selecting research topics for students).
We have identified the topics and content of further research. The class was divided into 4 groups, each of which investigated one of the problematic issues:
1 group - smart (collected material on the ecology of the Smolensk region);
2 group of analyzers (analyzed the collected material, wrote scripts for videos, edited information on the pages of the site);
3 group – video directors (mounted the presented material in the format of videos);
4 group – sound engineers (voiced videos);
5 group – web designers (developed the structure of the site, formatted the text and placed graphics, set the background for the pages of the site, chose the emblem of the site, placed the navigation panel)

3. Practical(collection of information on the selected topic, systematization of materials, preparation and design of the results of work in the form of a website publication).

4. Final one.(Site protection and summary)
In the process of implementing the project, a great deal of work was carried out with various sources (books, the Internet, tables, etc.), work was organized in groups to study specific problems in order to choose the most effective ways to solve it.
At the end of the project, the children learned and understood the environmental situation of the Smolensk region at the moment, and also realized that children can also help the planet in general and the native land in particular.
After completing the project, students learned:

  • Collect information on environmental issues,
  • work in a team not only with classmates, but also with parents and acquaintances,
  • analyze environmental situations,
  • propose their own ideas for solving environmental problems and defend their point of view,
  • They've developed an environmental consciousness.

During the work on the project, students got the opportunity to develop skills of independent work, self-educational activity, the ability to navigate the flow of information. A distinctive feature of the project is that it provides for integration with other academic subjects: information from physics, chemistry and other educational subjects can be used by students in the process of designing sites of the relevant topic.
