The oldest of all mysteries!
This ancient Sumerian mystery has stood the test of time, putting the noggins to the test for millennia! It is also one of the oldest written mysteries known to mankind.
The Sumerians lived in the land of Sumer, now modern Iraq. Besides writing puzzles, they also created one of the oldest known writing systems.
Can you solve this most ancient mystery?
“A house founded on a foundation like heaven. A house covered in a veil like a secret box. A house set on a base like a goose. A man enters it blindly, but leaves it sighted.”
Homer's fateful situation
Ancient riddles come from many ancient sources, including the story of Homer, a Greek poet. He is said to have visited the island of Ios and came across several fishermen there.
He asked them, “How is your day?” and they answered with this riddle. In his quest to find a solution, Homer is said to have stayed on the island until he died.

Samson's trick
This ancient mystery comes from the seventh book of the Old Testament, the Book of Judges. In this story, Samson posed the riddle to his thirty dinner guests.
His rules were that they should give him expensive clothes if they were wrong. Or vice versa, if they did everything right.

Ancient Egyptian mystery
This ancient mystery comes from the famous king Oedipus. It was written in the 5th century BC.
In this story, Oedipus must answer the mystery of the Sphinx. He had to do this to pass through the gates of Thebes, which was guarded by the Sphinx.
If he had been wrong, the Sphinx would have eaten him. Fortunately, he got it right.

Gollum's mysteries
During the meeting of Bilbo and Gollum, many mysteries were solved. If Bilbo had answered wrong, Gollum would have eaten him; if not, he could have run away! Here is a mystery from their fateful meeting.

The plight of the sage
