Totemism ("ot-otem" in North American Indian language means "his gender") is a system of religious ideas about the relationship between a group of people (usually a clan) and a totem - a mythical ancestor, most often an animal or plant of some kind. The totem was treated as a kind and caring ancestor and patron who protects people - his relatives - from hunger, cold, disease and death.
