Totemism ("Ottem" in the language of the North American Indians means "his genus") is a system of religious ideas about the relationship between a group of people (usually a genus) and a totem - a mythical ancestor, most often some animal or plant. Totem was treated as a kind and caring ancestor and patron who protects people - their relatives - from hunger, cold, disease and death.
